Covid: 1.7m people had virus last week as levels continue to rise in UK

Office for National Statistics reports highest estimate for total coronavirus infections since April

Covid-19 levels are continuing to rise in all four nations of the UK, with the increase probably caused by infections compatible with the Omicron variants BA.4 and BA.5, the Office for National Statistics has said.

Last week 1.7 million people in private households are estimated to have had the virus, up 23% from 1.4 million the previous week.
