UKTN Podcast: Paragraf CEO on where the semiconductor strategy falls short

The UK published its long-awaited semiconductor strategy last month to a mixed reception from the tech industry. One of those “frustrated” by the strategy is Dr Simon Thomas, co-founder and CEO of Paragraf, a British firm commercialising graphene-based electronics. In this episode of the UKTN Podcast, Thomas explains what the semiconductor strategy gets right – and what it gets wrong.

Cambridge-based Paragraf specialises in graphene-based electronics, a material with highly promising capabilities that could prove to be the perfect alternative to silicon in electronic devices due to its conductivity and power efficiency. It has raised more than $85m in funding.

During the 30-minute episode, the Paragraf chief tells UKTN Podcast host Jane Wakefield how graphene could be used to produce chips that “operate 1,000 times faster than [in] today’s computers”.

Thomas – who has a background in physics, engineering and material science – also delves into the “interesting process” of Paragraf acquiring US chip firm Cardea Bio, which closed in May 2023, and the company’s expansion plans for 2023.
