James Cleverly fails to deny calling Rwanda deportation policy ‘batshit’ in private – UK politics live

Home secretary claims he does not remember if he made disparaging comments about the government’s Rwanda plan

The government has already given Rwanda £140m as part of its deportation deal, even though not one asylum seeker has yet been sent to the country. Asked about this on LBC, James Cleverly, the home secretary, said he would not be apologising for spending this money. He claimed the police was already having a deterrent effect. He said

I’m going to be really clear on this. I make no apology at all for spending money protecting this nation. It is the primary function of government.

We know that even before the first flight has taken off the Rwanda policy is having a deterrent effect.
