Investors hop aboard train ticket app Seatfrog’s £6m round

Venture capital firms including Pembroke VCT, Octopus Ventures and Praetura Ventures have invested £6m into Seatfrog, a train ticket platform taking on Trainline.

The London-headquartered business lets users book train tickets, switch trains and bid for an upgrade to first class.

“Our mission is to be the platform of choice for rail, helping people fall in love with taking the train again, and enabling operators to run more profitable networks full of happier, less stressed passengers – it’s long overdue,” said Seatfrog co-founder and CEO Iain Griffin.

CEO Iain Griffin and CTO Dirk Stewart founded Seatfrog to fill the approximately 570 million empty first-class seats left empty each year according to the company.

Seatfrog is partnered with train operators such as Avanti, CrossCountry and EMR.

If follows a £4.5m Series A in July 2018, also led by Octopus Ventures.

David Foreman, managing partner, Praetura Ventures said: “Many of our team used Seatfrog long before we spoke to them about this investment.”

“As fans ourselves, we can see that the Seatfrog proposition is clearly loved by its users as shown by their thousands of industry-leading reviews.”

Founded in 2018, Seatfrog says it has saved customers £43m on their train travel.

Another travel firm recently backed by Praetura Ventures is the AI airport management platform AeroCloud.
