Three tech jobs to discover in the West Midlands this week

The West Midlands was the UK’s fastest-growing tech sector in 2021, with government figures recognising the region’s strength in digital. In fact, the region is forecasted to create 52,000 digital roles by 2025.

Birmingham was also singled out in 2021’s Kalifa Review of UK Fintech as an established cluster with a significant financial services presence, with the city’s specialisms including lending, payments and banking.

Notable companies

HSBC has relocated its UK Retail Banking Head Office from London to Birmingham and Goldman Sachs opened its biggest office in the UK outside London, creating hundreds of technology jobs in the area. Monzo, Curve, and OakNorth all have offices here, and other notable companies in the area include Solihull’s Gymshark, which was valued at over £1bn in 2020.

Startup and early-stage companies are catered for also, with a range of support in the wider tech ecosystem, including from Birmingham Tech and the West Midlands Growth Company.

In digital health, the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network offers a range of incubator programmes for early-stage startups, and the NHS Digital Academy is also based in Birmingham. Additionally, the city is home to the Digital Health Quarter, which brings together companies, researchers, and healthcare providers to drive innovation in the sector.

With a strong footing and job growth, the outlook for tech in the West Midlands is positive, thanks to a diverse range of companies and organisations driving innovation.

Lead embedded software engineer, Octagon Group, Coventry

Octagon Group is recruiting a lead embedded software engineer for a company developing high-tech solutions within a safety-critical environment. The company is growing its team in Coventry and is actively looking for a lead embedded software engineer to direct the firmware team. You will need to be a strong embedded software development engineer with leadership experience. You will spend most of your time managing the team, and 20% or 30% of your time in hands-on code development.

To apply you’ll need to be very confident in embedded software development, have experience in embedded software development using C and experience in developing firmware that directly controls the peripherals, CPU timers, and memory allocation. RTOS experience, 8BIT, 32BIT,M0+ and/or M33 processors experience is also required.

Software engineer – online services F1, Electronic Arts, Birmingham

As a software engineer – online services F1 at Electronic Arts, you’ll have the chance to contribute to the latest installments of this award-winning game studio and help to raise the bar even higher. EA aims to evolve the ultimate Formula 1 experience for players everywhere, and you will develop technical solutions for gameplay features based on online services, implement client-side online services systems, work with the backend team on data design to support game features and contribute to backend online services development.

You will need four years of experience in C++ software development, an understanding of client-server-based services architecture, experience with asynchronous programming methods and multi-threaded code environments. You’ll also need know how to use network messaging and data transport mechanisms.

Solutions architect, Hays Recruitment, Birmingham

Recruitment firm Hays is working with a large public sector client in the West Midlands and is seeking an SAP/HR solutions architect. You will be responsible for providing the strategic direction and leadership in the design and delivery of HR systems solutions, ensuring alignment with business plans, vision, purpose, and values by overseeing the overall strategy with respect to HR design principles, master data governance and integration with various HR systems.

You’ll also ensure compliance to solution architectural design in the implementation of projects, provide architectural guidance to HR systems and relevant project teams, producing high-level solution designs and option analysis and direction to development teams in the translation of the preferred solution into detailed technical specifications.
