UKTN Podcast: Olio boss on building a ‘hyperlocal’ model of consumption to fight food waste

Tessa Clarke thinks the reason we waste so much food is because we are “no longer connected to our local communities”. To address this problem, Clarke launched the food-sharing app Olio in 2015. The Olio co-founder is this week’s guest on the UKTN Podcast, explaining the business model behind the circular economy and community-led app.

Since its launch, Olio has brought in over 6.9 million users, who have given away over 95 million portions of food. It has raised more than $50m in funding and secured partnerships with the likes of Tesco and Pret.

In the latest in a series of conversations with founders of high-growth UK tech companies, the Olio co-founder tells UKTN Podcast host Jane Wakefield about the company’s organic international growth to 63 countries, and how it is aiming to be the “Mailchimp of food redistribution”.

Elsewhere on the show, Clarke shares a teaser of Olio’s plan to rebrand later this year to increase its focus on second-hand items, in a move that will see it compete more directly with Facebook Marketplace.
