Via acquires navigation app Citymapper

New York transport software company Via has acquired the navigation app Citymapper for an undisclosed sum.

Via’s acquisition of Citymapper is funded by a $110m (£90.5m) round at a $3.5bn valuation last month. Via said at the time it would use this to grow its portfolio.

Whilst Citymapper’s total funding remains unknown, it has previously received $58.7m (£48.3m) from the likes of Index Ventures, Balderton Capital and Connect Ventures, according to Dealroom.

Daniel Ramot, co-founder and CEO of Via, said: “By bringing our teams together, we see an exciting opportunity to deliver Citymapper’s capabilities to cities and transit agencies all over the world, so that they can create the most user-friendly and relevant transit experience for their communities.”

Founded in 2011, the Citymapper app lets users plan and navigate their travel routes in more than 100 cities around the world. While it is free to use, Citymapper brings in revenue from subscriptions, referral fees, as well as licensing fees from its enterprise product.

City transport operators use Via to predict and manage their public transport networks.

Following the acquisition, Via will incorporate the London-based company’s data and technology into its transport platform to provide a “unified solution” for commuters, transport operators and cities.

“We share this vision with Via, and through this acquisition, can expand Citymapper to a larger audience, make our technology available to cities and transit agencies, and extend the positive impact on the communities we serve,” said Azmat Yusuf, founder and CEO of Citymapper.
