Phare Labs raises £300k to reinvent the fire alarm

Phare Labs, a London startup looking to reinvent the fire alarm, has secured a £300,000 investment from the British Design Fund along with angel investors.

Co-founded by engineers Daniel McBride and Arnau Donate, Phare Labs’ creation was inspired by “a spate of false alarms” experienced by the founders.

Looking to reinvent the traditional fire alarm design, patented in the 1970s, Phare Labs’ technology uses a combination of smoke detection and indoor air quality sensors. It says its fire alarms use machine learning and dramatically improves fire detection accuracy, reducing false positives.

Phare Labs’ fire alarm can also monitor other factors determining air quality.

“We’re incredibly grateful to British Design Fund and all our other investors, for getting behind the company and what we are trying to achieve,” said McBride.

It is an exciting time, as we look to go from prototype to production within the next 12 months and to get Phare alarms into people’s homes across the UK – and around the world – creating safer, healthier places to live.”

Damon Bonser, CEO of the British Design Fund, added: “Phare Labs is a fantastic example of a startup that spotted a problem and set about engineering a solution with the potential to make a real difference for householders across the world.”
