Single parent dating app Playdate raises £250k

Playdate, a UK-based dating app for single parents, has raised £250,000 in its first external funding round after bootstrapping the business since its launch in 2021.

The company claims it has created the country’s first dating app aimed solely at single parents. Its founder, Nevine Coutry, was inspired by her own experience as a single mother. Coutry was frustrated at the limited opportunities for single parents to meet people.

Research from the company found that there are as many 2.9 million single parents in the UK, suggesting a potentially significant market for the app.

The app includes childcare solutions as part of a partnership with a UK-based nanny/babysitter app, Bubble. It also has an “invisibility” feature to avoid being seen by ex-partners.

Coutry said that launching a data app during a lockdown was a unique challenge.

“Despite these obstacles, Playdate has flourished which is only testament to the fact that there is a huge audience for the app,” Coutry said.

“This untapped potential coupled with the organic growth over the past year is what has really driven this new investment.”

The investment round came from the VC firm Ankh Impact Ventures, along with a series of angel investors.

“Playdate’s mission is aligned with our focus on social impact and building an inclusive digital economy,” said Pierre Rolin, Founder and CEO of Ankh Impact Ventures.

“By fostering new relationships and family units, Playdate will improve children’s mental wellness and happiness and bring financial security to more families.”

Coutry will now look to grow the business by expanding the team and further develop the company’s tech.
