Edinburgh startup Fanbase nets £1m for sports ticketing software

Scottish digital ticketing startup Fanbase has completed a £1m funding round from London-based investor SaltPay.

The Edinburgh startup is developing mobile software that aims to improve the experience of fans buying tickets for sporting events.

Fanbase said its goal is to create new revenue for sports organisations by easing the process of buying tickets and engaging with the clubs. Among the features developed by Fanbase are stadium mapping and automated subscription renewals.

“We are enabling sports organisations to launch a team-branded mobile optimised, sports focussed digital ticketing service in minutes, while increasing hospitality revenue and saving hours per week for staff and volunteers responsible for bookings and operations,” said Fanbase co-founder and CEO Alasdair Crawley.

“Once you turn the key and start using Fanbase, the possibilities are endless, from setting up your branded ticketing, utilising the data, and communicating with your fans.”

According to Crawley, clubs can also use the software to “track fan data” to identify audiences and target sales.

He added: “We are now a fully integrated sports ticketing tech stack that can handle online, ticket office and ‘pay at the gate’, so right through from ticket office order, payment, and fulfilment.”

The startup’s tech is being used across professional football, rugby, netball, ice hockey, and handball. Fanbase customers include Scottish Premiership club Hibernian FC and Super 6 Rugby side Southern Knights.

The company has received additional support through the Microsoft startup accelerator programme, which included financial backing of more than £250,000.

The current company headcount is 10 staff, however, with the addition of new funds, the company has said it plans to scale the team over the next year.
