Former health secretary Matt Hancock has announced he’s shutting down his eponymous app five years after launching it to communicate with his constituents.
The MP launched the Matt Hancock App in 2018 while culture secretary to “promote a healthy, open and impartial debate”.
However, the Conservative MP turned I’m A Celebrity contestant turned independent MP said he’s closing the app to focus on TikTok.
“It’s time to bid a fond farewell to the ‘iconic’ Matt Hancock App – a platform that secured multiple exclusives, including my backing of Rishi Sunak for PM,” wrote Hancock in a final post on the app.
“While the news will come as a blow to those who can’t remember life before the app, fear not. For those left wondering where they can get my latest updates, I’ll be keeping you posted on TikTok.”
The app has been downloaded more than 5,000 on the Google Play Store, though it holds a disappointing review ranking of just 2.7 out of five stars.
Hancock, who was health secretary during the pandemic before resigning in June 2021 for breaking lockdown rules, has always been keen to present himself as a tech-savvy conservative.
Away from his app, Hancock has been a vocal advocate of fintech and the cryptoasset industry. Hancock spoke to UKTN in June last year to double down on his support for crypto, despite numerous market crashes.
