Dozens of Hong Kong pro-democracy figures arrested in sweeping crackdown

Campaigners and politicians held in wave of arrests under the national security law

More than 50 pro-democracy politicians and campaigners have been arrested in Hong Kong under the national security law, reportedly over accusations they “subverted state power” by holding primaries and saying they intended to win a majority of seats in the region’s election.

The sweeping arrests on Wednesday morning came without warning, and shocked observers. It is the largest single mass arrest of people under the national security law (NSL).
