Boris Johnson has withdrawn from the race to be Conservative leader, leaving Rishi Sunak as the clear frontrunner to be prime minister.

As more senior party figures cautioned that a Johnson comeback would lead to chaos and an early election, the former prime minister struggled to get the backing of enough Conservative MPs.
