The 10 startups making up the first cohort of the Sunderland Internet of Things (IoT) and 5G accelerator have been revealed.
Launched by Sunderland City Council with BAI Communications and Sunderland Software City (SSC), the IoT and 5G accelerator will look to support regional startups with six weeks of mentorship, infrastructure support, and a £10,000 grant for each company.
The programme, which is set to start later this month, will not take any equity or intellectual property rights from any of the participating startups.
“We’re proud to be putting digital innovation at the heart of Sunderland’s future. To successfully deliver our ambitious Smart City Plan, we must invest in next-generation digital infrastructure and services to help improve the lives of our residents,” said Naomi Hutchinson, chief innovation officer at Sunderland City Council.
Here is the full list of companies making up the programme’s first cohort:
Awaretag
A startup providing technology to protect homes against damp, mould, rogue landlords, and energy inefficiency. Awaretag develops 3D sensors that monitor homes, providing a visual map with measurable metrics to detect home problems.
Cystel
A cybersecurity startup for enterprises, Cystel describes itself as approaching security from the lens of hackers. The startup offers AI solutions to protect client data and IT infrastructure.
Digimonk
A health tech startup specialising in patients suffering from motor skill issues.
Floki
Founded to support NHS staff, Floki works with health centres to simplify the process of managing and tracking down medical equipment. Floki reports that nurses can spend over an hour per shift simply looking for equipment. Floki’s Bluetooth-enabled system allows medical staff to monitor the location and status of equipment.
Krellian
A smart building startup, Krellian helps property managers meet net-zero targets, optimise occupancy space usage, reduce energy consumption, and maintain proper health and safety standards. It also includes a cloud-based ‘digital twin’ of a client’s building for better monitoring and management.
Manulytica
Manulytica is developing a product to allow manufacturers to better make use of digital, AI solutions. The company acquires large-scale data on manufacturing and supply chains, digitising the process.
Roxid
Founded to support the management of heritage sites, Roxid’s technology allows archaeology sites to utilise modern processes like image processing, object detection, and 3D modelling.
Simplifai
Founded to modernise city planning, Simplifai uses artificial intelligence to find solutions to traffic congestion by generating real-time traffic control strategies.
Trigan
A blockchain startup that claims its token-based technology can support communities and boost the earning potential of those facing poverty and inequality.
Urban Data Collective
A startup that tracks urban data to support the processes of carbon emissions reduction, EV infrastructure management, and urban planning. Urban Data Collective claims its platform brings together data from connected areas that impact each other but are nonetheless often only tracked individually.
