Three tech companies offering unlimited holiday for UK roles

If you could create your dream job, what would it look like? Would you like to work at home or in the office? Would you prefer to have a big team or a small close-knit one? Would you prefer a set amount of holiday, or unlimited?

One thing that most tech workers can agree on is that they favour flexibility. According to a survey by Deloitte, 94% of people said they benefit from having increased freedom in their career.

Of course, flexibility can take many forms. Some companies have flexible working hours with no fixed ‘clocking in’ or ‘clocking out’ time. Others offer employees the chance to work from anywhere in the world.

One of the exciting (and controversial) perks is unlimited annual leave, or paid time off.

More and more companies are giving employees the opportunity to take as much time off as they want every single year. In general, this means that as long as the employee has met their employer’s expectations and organised their leave with their team, they are free to take time off whenever they like.

Unlimited holiday does not mean that employees can wake up on a random Tuesday and decide they would rather go to brunch than their weekly budget meeting (sorry!). Instead, the policy simply avoids putting hard and fast rules in place.

Unlimited holiday benefits

There are lots of obvious benefits to this policy. It’s a great way to attract staff, avoid employee burnout, and foster a sense of trust within an organisation.

However, if it is mismanaged, staff can feel guilty about booking time off, the policy can be abused or it can end up increasing anxiety among staff. Some studies have shown that employees tend to take less time off than when they had an upper limit.

Whether you are for or against this recent employee perk, it looks like it’s here to stay. Here’s a quick look at three companies operating in the UK that currently offer unlimited holiday, and there are plenty more to discover on the UKTN Job Board too.

Oracle

In 2020, Oracle was the second largest software company in the world based on revenue alone. Today, the company employs a staggering 143,000 people around the globe.

Oracle offers unlimited annual leave to salaried employees. However, employees must get preapproval from their manager so they aren’t OOO when the company really needs them. Employees can also apply for sabbaticals after a certain amount of time at the company (dependent on their role).

The company is currently seeking an email digital designer for its London office. You’ll work on Bronto Software, which provides a leading marketing platform for retailers and other commerce-focused companies to drive revenue through email, mobile and social campaigns.

Used by over 1,000 organisations, you’ll play a key role in Bronto’s continued growth, its day-to-day and provide remote execution services to clients with a high degree of quality. You will also schedule marketing campaigns and code and test messages/templates for rendering.

More on the email digital designer job is available here.

Indeed

Indeed has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to employee perks. The company has excellent health and wellness benefits as well as brilliant compensation packages.

In 2016, Indeed made a monumental shift and began offering employees unlimited holiday days. The company believes that an open annual leave policy gives employees more flexibility and a sense of empowerment. Bryan Chaney, director of global employer brand and talent attraction at Indeed at the time stated: “Not only is it better for people to be able to take time off when they need it…but if [we] treat people like adults, they typically behave like adults.”

Right now, there is a senior software engineer – enterprise role in Edinburgh available. You’ll be a part of the company’s enterprise advertiser team and will work across a range of applications designed for customers to get the best performance from its ads.

Graphcore

Have you heard of Graphcore? This exciting startup is at the “forefront of the artificial intelligence revolution” thanks to its cutting-edge semiconductors. Alongside great salaries, the company offers tangible benefits such as pension, health insurance, and life cover. However, it’s Graphcore’s unlimited annual leave policy that helps it stand out from the crowd.

Flexibility isn’t just a buzzword at Graphcore: its website states: “We trust you to work from home or do the school run occasionally and to take as much holiday as you need while being accountable for getting your work done to the best of your ability.”

Graphcore needs a Bristol-based DFT engineer with knowledge of industrial standards and experience in debugging ATPG patterns. You should also have familiarity with programming languages and great communication skills.
