Have you ever wondered who the biggest and best employers in the UK tech scene are? Who has the nicest offices, the most sought-after perks, and the best diversity and inclusion policies? Well, look no further.
We’ve done all the legwork and found out who the largest UK tech employers are in four key sectors; fintech, cybersecurity, biotech, and IT and software.
So, if you’re on the hunt for your next role, then pay attention to the list below.
Fintech
By now, you’ve probably heard of Revolut. The company is synonymous with a whole generation of customers who moved to the online app thanks to quick transfers, easy-to-use savings vaults, and of course, its impressive selection of GIFs. It employs over 3,000 people.
Last year, it became the most valuable British fintech firm after a fresh funding round pushed its valuation to £24bn. It hasn’t been without controversy though: in recent months the company has seen multiple resignations in high-level risk and compliance roles as it strives to achieve growth targets.
Hiring continues apace: jobs advertised on the UKTN Job Board include growth marketing manager, head of accounting and strategy, and operations manager. Perks and benefits include medical insurance, generous annual leave (plus the opportunity to work abroad for 60 days per year), and regular themed social events.
Cybersecurity
PwC and cybersecurity go hand in hand. The company offers a mixture of proactive and preventative cybersecurity solutions for large clients globally. PwC has 19 offices across the UK, and has a nationwide headcount of 22,300.
Last year, a report named PwC as one of the UK’s top 25 employers. The company ranked first in the professional services category for its flexible working policy and clear plans for post-pandemic work.
PwC is currently hiring for several attractive roles. Alongside the usual work perks like learning and development, we were impressed by PwC’s inclusion policies. The company has 11 inclusion networks (for example, a Hindu network, a gender balance network, and a military network). These groups aim to provide a sense of community while supporting diverse talent and raising awareness.
Biotech
The UK’s biggest biotech employer is homegrown. GSK plc, formerly GlaxoSmithKline plc, is a British multinational pharmaceutical and biotechnology company with global headquarters in London. The company makes vaccines and speciality medicine to prevent and treat diseases. It employs over 17,000 people.
The culture at GSK plc is one of collaboration and people are at the heart of everything the company does. As the website states, “We aim to positively impact the health of 2.5 billion people over the next 10 years”.
If you work in the biotech field, keep an eye out for job openings on the UKTN Job Board. GSK plc is hiring for numerous positions including vaccines discovery project leader, head of patient access and affordability, and automation engineers.
IT and software
In the IT and software category we have the global behemoth that is Salesforce, a CRM leader that “empowers companies of every size and industry to digitally transform and create a 360° view of their customers”.
The company has offices across the UK and while it might not be the largest IT employer at the moment, that’s all about to change. Speaking at a Salesforce World Tour event in London, UK boss Zahra Bahrololoumi said the company will create more than 270,000 jobs in the UK over the next four years. With so much expansion on the horizon, it could be a great time to join the team.
There is a clear focus on learning and development here. Some of the company’s programmes include university recruitment, a computer science curriculum in K-12 schools, and training for veterans and their spouses. It was also ranked number three in the 2021 Great Places to Work Report.
