From Giant’s Causeway to the Titanic Museum, Northern Ireland is known for its rich history and culture. What you might not have known is that Northern Ireland has a thriving tech industry – which means companies there are always on the hunt to fill new jobs.
According to a report by the Digital Economy Council, Northern Ireland’s tech sector now accounts for more than one in seven jobs in the region. The data also shows that 15% of new jobs are in tech, with a 12.4% month-on-month increase.
While Northern Ireland is relatively small, its main cities and towns (Belfast, Derry, Lisburn, Newry and Armagh) each have their own tech hubs.
Unsurprisingly, Belfast is the largest. More than a quarter of all available jobs in the city are tech-related compared to 10% in 2018.
Northern Ireland: the main tech sectors
The government’s Kalifa review of UK fintech identified Northern Ireland as one of a number of areas showing “exciting potential to grow or are already featuring a specialist fintech focus”.
Northern Ireland’s tech scene is varied and there are a few main clusters that include cybersecurity, AI data and analytics, sports tech, and IT and cloud services.
Top technology leaders such as Microsoft, Fujitsu, SAP, Rapid7, and Whitehat security have all set up bases in Belfast in recent years.
Why are companies investing in Northern Ireland?
Well, a lot of it’s got to do with talent. Northern Ireland is home to world-class universities and colleges, including Queen’s University Belfast. It’s also an appealing place to live for tech professionals. Belfast is the second-best place in the UK for tech workers to live (in terms of value) according to the Digital Economy Council. The cost of living in Belfast, for example, is significantly cheaper than other UK cities.
According to the same report, the median salary within the tech sector is £40,000, while the median salary across all roles is £30,000.
