Admin worker turned author raises £3m on blockchain with first family NFT

Cheryl Griffin is a self-published author of two children’s books and the creator of the first family focused NFT project, AlphaBetty Doodles, which has turned over £3 million in less than a year.

Available on OpenSea, the world’s first and largest NFT marketplace, the unique NFT project has attracted the attention of celebrities, professional athletes and high-profile social media influencers worldwide and now includes a range of merchandise.

The idea came after Cheryl Griffin self-published stories which had been carried in her head for over a decade; telling them to her young children, hoping that one day she would put them down on paper. After self-publishing the first book, Cheryl was encouraged to illustrate her second –

AlphaBetty Doodles. AlphaBetty is a colourful book character who leads children through a series of adventures to help them learn the alphabet. It is these illustrations which have raised £3m and helped Cheryl give back to charities. The majority of the money raised has gone back into the project or been donated to causes close to Cheryl’s heart: mostly children’s causes, including the under-funded primary school which her children attended in Brighton.

The achievements are made even more impressive after the mum-of-two from Brighton didn’t think her illustrations were good enough for the book.

An NFT, or non-fungible token, is a digital asset that is bought and sold online using crypto-currency – or put more simply, ‘using digital cash’!

The digital asset can be in the form of art, music, games, or videos but typically, NFTs haven’t always been accessible to families because of the nature of some of the content. However, AlphaBetty is changing the space with the first family focused NFT being made available to buy.

‘Betties’ are fun illustrations which can be bought for as little as £65 – but which can be sold on for profit or cherished forever as original, one-of-a-kind pieces of digital art.

This year has seen popular NFTs selling for hundreds of thousands of pounds – even millions.

Cheryl Griffin says: “The NFT space is thrilling. But it is like learning a new language and the positioning can sometimes feel exclusive – almost like you need to be fluent in NFT to be in the gang. The AlphaBetty project uses ‘plain-English’ which makes the NFT attractive to first-time holders and young people.”

AlphaBetty is available for £65 from https://opensea.io/collection/alphabetty-doodles.
