SoftBank backs AI-based edtech platform Atom Learning in $25m raise

Atom Learning, an online learning platform for primary school children, has raised $25m funding in a Series A round led by SoftBank’s Vision Fund 2.

It is Atom Learning’s first outside funding round and also the largest Series A funding round ever by a UK-based edtech startup.

Atom Learning will use the investment to accelerate its growth in the UK and double its team over the next 12 months. It will focus on hiring more teachers and tech professionals to its London office and plans to expand into the US in 2022.

Founded by Alex Hatvany and Jake O’Keeffe, Atom Learning combines uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create learning materials that adapt to the users’ level of knowledge. The tech can give the probability of a student answering a question correctly.

The London-based company offers two products in its portfolio – Atom Prime for teachers and Atom Nucleus for parents of children aged 7 to 11 years. It is a fully automated alternative to private tuition that parents can access for their children through a monthly subscription.

The company employs 100 education and technology professionals. Atom Prime is used by teachers in more than 500 primary schools. In 2019 it announced its international expansion into Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

“We are delighted to partner with SoftBank as we scale in the UK and internationally,” said Jake O’Keefe, co-founder of Atom Learning. “They’re a natural partner due to their ambition and their commitment to edtech in Europe and globally. Our mission is to provide all children wherever they are and whatever their background with an affordable, high-quality education. We are doing this by combining exceptional teacher-made content with industry-defining technology”
