Foreign aid has been slashed by about £4bn a year for the foreseeable future after Boris Johnson narrowly saw off an attempt by Tory rebels to block the cut.
The government won a vote in the House of Commons by 333 to 298, despite blistering criticism from the former prime minister Theresa May that No 10 was abandoning the world’s poorest.
