The UK government has launched an “evidence-based model” aimed at speeding up the adoption of AI across the economy.
Based on the earlier launch of Assist, a bespoke generative AI tool designed for the Government Communication Service (GCS), the new model will encourage AI implementation to meet – what the Cabinet Office has described as – its full potential.
The Adapt tool has now been adopted by more than 70% of government communications staff across more than 200 state organisations. The government claimed those using the tool reported saving roughly three hours a week.
The new ASO model outlines three steps to implementing AI for businesses and public sector organisations:
- Adopt – Concerned with enabling people to start using AI tools by understanding the challenges they face and how new technology can help;
- Sustain – Ensuring those people have the guidance and organisational culture to embed AI processes into regular working activities;
- Optimise – Minimising the risks associated with using AI by identifying, monitoring and mitigating unintended consequences that can emerge from AI adoption.
“We know there are massive opportunities to use AI to improve public services, save public money and boost productivity and growth,” said Cabinet Office Minister Georgia Gould.
“But there is still a long way to go to open up these tools to every part of the public sector and economy and give people confidence to safely embrace AI opportunities.
“The Civil Service has developed a model to accelerate AI use at pace that can be used across companies and the wider public sector, putting government at the heart of accelerating innovation and growth.”
The model was unveiled to businesses at an event attended by representatives from Meta, Microsoft and Harvard Business School, among others.
“Supporting business to adopt and scale their use of AI will be critical to the UK successfully seizing the opportunity to drive productivity and economic growth as the AI revolution unfolds,” commented Rebecca Stimson, UK public policy director at Meta.
“The ASO model is a great contribution to that work. At Meta we believe open source AI in particular, which is free for businesses to download and build on, can lead to better products, faster innovation and competition by making crucial tech solutions more accessible, which benefits us all.”
