Travel warnings issued after snow forces visitors to abandon cars and sleep in village halls and council chambers

Hundreds of people were stranded in the Lake District overnight after “unprecedented” snowfall forced visitors to abandon their cars.

Cumbria police warned people not to travel to the county on Sunday amid reports of fallen trees, power cuts and blocked roads.
