North Korean missile launch briefly sparks evacuation order in Japan

Local authorities issued the warning on the north island of Hokkaido, shortly after the launch of a suspected ballistic missile from the Korean peninsula

Japan’s government has admitted that its missile alert system malfunctioned after it warned residents that a missile launched by North Korea on Thursday morning could fall on or close to the northern island of Hokkaido.

The government-run emergency broadcasting system – J-Alert – told millions of people in Hokkaido to take immediate cover after the North test-fired what appeared to be a medium- or long-range missile.
