Boris Johnson urged to distance himself from selection of new Met police chief

Force is in process of investigating whether PM and others in Downing Street broke lockdown laws

Boris Johnson is facing calls to distance himself from the process to select the new head of the Metropolitan police, as the force is currently investigating whether he and others in Downing Street broke lockdown laws.

Opposition MPs and one senior backbench Tory expressed particular alarm after an unnamed “ally” of Johnson briefed the media that the Met would need to be “very certain” before considering fining the prime minister, and should show discretion.
