As Patrick Butler and Damian Carrington report, this morning an independent review commissioned by the government is proposing a £3bn sugar and salt tax as part of a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity” to break Britain’s addiction to junk food, cut meat consumption by nearly a third and help tackle climate change. The review, the National Food Strategy, is here, and here is our report on what it says.

I think you have to be very cautious before putting burdens on members of the public, particularly those on lower incomes. I do think you have to be very careful about going down that route because I don’t want to make life more difficult for people on low incomes.
