OQC on path to commercially viable quantum computers

SBI-backed quantum computing company Oxford Quantum Circuits (OQC) claims to have significantly progressed on the path to commercially viable technology with the release of new research on error detection.

The company has been able to detect errors in a more hardware efficient manner, in what OQC describes as “key” to unlocking the commercial potential of quantum computing.

Quantum error detection at the qubit level is a system of techniques that are used to identify and address issues in quantum data, which is vastly more complex than traditional computing data.

While error correction for standard bits is relatively simple, the superpositional properties of qubits make quantum error correction both difficult and, if done efficiently, extremely valuable.

OQC’s advancement brings the threshold of commercial viability outlined in the company’s roadmap closer to the present.

The company released its roadmap earlier this month, with an initial target for commercially viable computers set for 2028.

“This roadmap is a landmark for quantum computing, in the UK and globally. It shows that the moment when quantum computing begins to transform people’s lives is closer than many realise,” said chief executive Gerald Mullally.

“This underlines the urgency with which organisations, in particular in financial services and national security, should work out their plan for a quantum-transformed world.”

Founded in 2017, OQC has become a major player in the global quantum computing industry and has already developed the UK’s first commercially available quantum computer.

The University of Oxford spinout secured a $100m Series B funding round in 2023, receiving investment from Lansdowne Partners, SBI, Oxford Investment Consultants, Oxford Science Enterprises and the University of Tokyo.
