A new UK AI industry body backed by the University of Oxford and the British Standards Institution (BSI) has launched to support engineering and AI adoption.
TechWorks-AI, which launched in the former HQ of Alan Turing’s codebreakers and site of the AI Safety Summit Bletchley Park, is an engineering hub that aims to support best practices for automated technology.
The group will encourage collaboration on innovating in AI across a broad range of applications, including robotics, semiconductor design and life sciences.
“TechWorks-AI provides a platform where academia and industry can come together to tackle the most pressing challenges presented by AI in cybersecurity,” said Andrew Martin, professor of systems security at the University of Oxford.
“The opportunities for knowledge-sharing and collaborative projects are exceptional, and we are very pleased to be a founder member of this vibrant community.”
The body said it will jointly develop AI strategies and guidance with industry stakeholders, promote knowledge sharing among special interest groups and – working the BSI – provide organisations with AI security standards.
“BSI are excited to be founder member of TechWorks-AI, becoming part of a diverse and innovative community that is critical for shaping the future of AI standards,” said Dr Ivan Serwano, AI consulting manager at BSI.
“By collaborating with industry leaders and academic pioneers, we can develop frameworks to ensure AI technologies are trustworthy, reliable, future-proofed and globally aligned.”
Other founding members include the University of Bristol, the Manufacturing Technology Centre and Embecosm.
“The launch marks a pivotal step in advancing our starting goal of engineering trustworthy AI, which is perfectly aligned to the UK’s AI vision for security and growth,” said TechWorks COO John Moor.
“TechWorks is uniquely positioned to do this as it draws on decades of expertise in building successful grass-roots innovation and technology networks.”
The launch of the body follows the opening of the London AI Hub, a joint venture between Tech Nation, Merantix, Onfido and Husayn Kassai.
