Manchester constituency home to most startups outside of London

The constituency of Manchester Central is home to the most tech startups outside of London at 252, according to a new report.

Eight out of the top-ranking constituencies are in London, including all of the top five, according to startup lobby group Coadec, which rebranded to the Startup Coalition on Monday.

Dom Hallas, executive director of the Startup Coalition, said: “The data shows what people in the startup ecosystem already know – the tech startup economy that has started and thrived in London is now increasingly in every part of the United Kingdom.”

Notable Manchester-based tech companies include Netacea, Modern Milkman and Orka.

Manchester is followed by Cambridge with 245 startups. The data shows that while the capital still dominates, there are signs of continued startup growth outside of the golden triangle of Oxford, Cambridge and London.

The Startup Coalition data found that all Oxford constituencies were beaten by Leeds Central (129 startups) and Bristol West (178 startups).

Outside of England, the highest concentration of tech startups in Scotland is Edinburgh North and Leith (144). In Northern Ireland, the Belfast South constituency took the top spot with 119 startups, while Cardiff Central’s 46 startups makes it the highest in Wales.

“I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved so far – from the Future Fund to SEIS expansion,” said Hallas. “But with the success of British tech so far means it faces new challenges.”

The Startup Coalition is appointing Kirti Nuthi as its head of tech regulation and a steering board. Seedcamp’s managing partner Carlos Espinal and Entrepreneur First COO Tom Shinner COO are among those on the board.

Its report was launched on Monday evening to coincide with London Tech Week.
