York-based quiz tech startup SpeedQuizzing launched a free version of its industry-leading virtual quiz hosting platform. This platform is targeted at teachers and pupils as it supports both classroom-based and remote learning across the UK. SpeedQuizzing platform provides free access to online platforms that educators can use to run interactive, fast-paced, multi-round virtual quizzes that will support learning.
App-based learning via smart devices!
The York-based company founded by Alan Leach and John Leach employs 12 people to create new site SchoolQuizzing.com for UK-based educators. Also, there is an area where pupils can go to download the free SpeedQuizzing Live app available on Apple, Google and Amazon app stores.
In order to learn via playing, pupils or their guardians have to just download the free SpeedQuizzing Live app on their phone or tablet and enter the quiz pin that was provided by the hosting educator. It is as simple as just viewing and answering each question. At any given time, up to 40 pupils can participate in a quiz. Those students who are in a remote location can use Zoom or Microsoft Teams on their device to interact with others.
A range of game formats
SchoolQuizzing offers a range of game-formats that lets educators cater to pupils of all ages and abilities. With the software provided by the quiz tech company, teachers can create their own topic-specific questions in a slew of game-play formats to make it interesting. They can have multiple choice questions, reveal the first letter of the answer or have picture and sequence questions.
It is possible to customise the quiz by imposing time limits to answer questions, reward the fastest correct answer with additional points, and avoiding opportunities to search answers on Google. The scoring will be done by the software automatically and there will be a range of buzzer noises that will be allocated amongst participants.
SpeedQuizzing co-founder Alan Leach said: “We were surprised to hear reports that teachers across the UK had resorted to using our existing ‘SpeedQuizzing’ platform throughout 2020 to spice up teaching, both in the classroom and remotely, with many of them resorting to paying for the SpeedQuizzing license out of their own pockets.”
“Features such as bonus points for the fastest correct answers won’t fit in with everyone’s teaching styles or school teaching policies, but as we’ve seen from hosting fun family quizzes throughout lockdowns over Zoom, people of all ages love trying to be the fastest to answer a question.
Successful trial by educator
One educator, who is a regular quiz host is Ben Knight, who teaches at All Saints’ First School in Leek, Staffordshire. He has already trialled the tech in the classroom catering to children aged three to nine years old. He said: “Outside of teaching, I’ve hosted SpeedQuizzing events for a while now, and have frequently used their technology to run mini quizzes for pupils at my school, which have always gone down very well.”
