Earlier, the Greek prime minister announced tougher lockdown violation fines (see 11.58am) but in what appears to be a screeching u-turn has now frozen the measure after criticism from the opposition.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis had said in a speech that the fines would be increased to €500 from €300 but after opposition leader Alexis Tsipras noted that many Greeks only earn a reduced salary of €534 during the pandemic, the PM said the fine would remain at the current rate for up to 10 days “as a gesture of goodwill”.
