Founder in Five: Q&A with Thriva Health CEO Hamish Grierson

Hamish Grierson is the CEO and co-founder of Thriva Health, an at-home blood testing company aiming to increase the length of time people live healthy lives.

Grierson founded Thriva Health in 2016 alongside Eliot Brooks and Tom Livesey. Its direct-to-consumer service tests for health areas including cholesterol, vitamin levels and liver health.

The London-based health tech startup says more than two million people have used its at-home testing kits. It has partnerships with the government, the NHS, insurers, GPs, private doctors and nutritionists.

Thriva Health raised £6m in Series A funding in 2019, with an additional £4m coming in 2020. The company experienced rapid growth during the pandemic, doubling its team.

In this week’s Founder in Five Q&A, Grierson reveals why he’s impressed by Stripe, why he believes bio-non-tech holds promise and why menopause is a sector ripe for disruption.

1. Which company’s growth story are you most impressed with?

Hamish Grierson: Stripe. Abstracting away a HUGE amount of complexity in the payments industry and making it available through a simple set of APIs is so powerful. We see a lot of commonality in what we’ve created for the diagnostics industry.

2. What are the best and worst parts of your job?

HG: The best is working alongside the most brilliantly talented people who I learn from and get inspired by on a daily basis.

The worst is not being able to be as present as a father as I want to be.

3. What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?

HG: Starting Thriva with no savings, a massive mortgage, a new wife and a six-month-old baby.

4. Which nascent technology holds the most promise?

HG: Bio-non-tech. Non-invasive, passively collected data to help us personalise our lifestyles is going to be incredible.

5. Excluding your own, what’s a sector that’s ripe for disruption?

HG: Menopause. There is a crippling lack of awareness (despite some strong startups in the space). Some basic and transformative hormone treatments are still not readily available and primary care doctors are given next to no training in it.
