Scottish remote care startup Waire Health raises £2m

Scottish medtech startup Waire Health, which is developing remote ward monitoring equipment for home care, has raised £2m.

Based in Edinburgh, Waire Health is looking to scale its sensor technology, which is designed to monitor the condition of at-home patients. At a time when NHS staff are spread thin and resources are limited, companies like Waire Health are seeking to reduce hospital readmission.

Waire has developed the C-Detect device, which uses AI to keep track of patients both in the hospital and at home. The company sells its tech to various healthcare organisations.

“The whole area of care at home got pushed over the edge during Covid.  What many companies didn’t fully appreciate was the paramount importance of usability,” said Waire Health founder and CEO, Dave Hurhangee.

“If devices have to rely on mobile connections or Bluetooth, they become difficult to use from the outset, for both patients and healthcare providers.

“We bring design and detail from years of experience of working with the technology, and our devices fall back to cellular if wi-fi falls off.”

The funding round was led by Eos Advisory alongside co-investor, Scottish Enterprise.

“As healthcare systems in the UK and around the world move to remote monitoring and real-time patient data, we see a huge opportunity for Waire Health to scale its C-Detect device,” said Mark Beaumont, a partner at Eos.

Kerry Sharp, director of entrepreneurship and investment at Scottish Enterprise, said: “The health tech sector is vital to the future success of Scotland’s economy and Waire Health is a fantastic example of a company that is showing true innovation in the field.”

Fellow home care startup CareLineLive also received funding this month, having raised £3m for its healthcare workflow optimisation platform.
