The 2022 IT Skills Report recorded a 295% increase in the number of data science-related tasks recruiters were setting for candidates in the interview process during 2021. However, there is a significant demand-supply imbalance due to a scarcity of skilled individuals.
Recent research by Virgin Media O2 estimates that this digital skills shortage costs the UK economy £12.8bn a year, while 55% of organisations face skill shortages. Respondents to a McKinsey survey say that solving the data analytics skills shortage is a priority focus area.
High demand
It’s clear that data science jobs are in high demand. They are often hailed as a fail-safe option in future tech career predictions because data is a key driver of business success. Data scientists enable organisations to process and interpret data which can then be used to make informed decisions.
Another reason for the high demand for data science jobs is that they can work across a wide variety of different sectors including health, education, retail and banking. Every organisation that wants to make data-driven decisions is looking to fill these roles.
For example, in sports, data science can evaluate athletes’ performance, and in healthcare, it can identify and predict disease. Or, in logistics, data science professionals can optimise delivery routes in real-time. The options are truly endless.
Professionals in this field often automate their own machine learning algorithms or design predictive modelling processes that can handle both structured and unstructured data.
Not one-size-fits-all
However, data science isn’t a one-size-fits-all term. This area of expertise encompasses a diverse range of different job roles including data analyst, data engineer, machine learning engineer, business intelligence developer, data architect, and big data engineer, to name a few.
As you can imagine, all of these roles are in hot demand, especially post-pandemic. Business leaders are more focused on data than ever before as they want to make informed business decisions, optimise spending, and drive growth, especially as we face another recession.
