Casualties reported as mayor of town of Petrinja says ‘half of the city no longer exists’

A strong earthquake has hit central Croatia, causing major damage to homes and other buildings in a town south-east of the capital, Zagreb.

Authorities said a girl was killed and at least 20 people were injured.
