Florence raises £28.5m for healthcare staff platform

London-based startup Florence has raised £28.5m for its platform that helps health and social care providers fill shifts with temporary staff.

Through its app Florence provides nurses, carers and support workers access to shifts, as well as CPD-accredited training.

For care organisations, it provides vetted workers, management software, and training current staff.

Florence said it will use the Series B funding round to offer new services outside of elderly care in addition to growing its offering in the UK and internationally.

It comes at a time when NHS England is struggling to fill 110,000 positions in the organisation and the government is introducing the Health and Social Care Levy to increase NHS funding.

“We believe everyone should have the care and dignity they deserve,” said Dr Charles Armitage, co-founder, Florence. “We see this funding as an investment in solving the issues our broken system faces on a daily basis, which disproportionately impact the most vulnerable people in our society.”

Florence was founded in 2017 by NHS doctor Charles Armitage and ex-British Army officer Dan Blake.

The Series B round was led by Axa Venture Partners alongside Roo Capital and previous investors SEEK Investments.

“There is a global shortage of healthcare workers, and staff management is very outdated compared to other industries,” said Imran Akram, general partner, Axa Venture Partners.

“Florence is tackling these issues head-on, and we are really impressed with what the team have done to date,” added Akram.

Florence works with 90,000 workers across more than 2,000 organisations and has raised a total of £35.5m in funding to date.
