Thousands of children will be tested for coronavirus in schools across Kent, Essex and London in an effort to stem rising infection rates that could lead to the capital being placed under tier 3 restrictions.
Public Health England (PHE) officials have urged the government to move London to the strictest measures when the tiers are reassessed on 16 December unless the data shifts significantly.
