The prime minister, Boris Johnson, and the chancellor, Rishi Sunak, have been told by the Metropolitan police that they will receive fixed-penalty notices (FPNs) as part of an investigation into allegations of lockdown parties held at Downing Street. Scotland Yard said it had made at least 50 referrals for FPNs – up from 20 at the end of March – to Acro Criminal Records Office, which is responsible for issuing the fines.

The Labour leader, Keir Starmer, has called on Johnson and Sunak to resign in the wake of the fines. Some have argued the Partygate scandal could ultimately topple the prime minister, who has apologised for the things he did not get right. Johnson is understood to have been present at six of the at least 12 events being investigated, and, although he initially said “all guidance was followed completely in No 10”, since the investigation began he has looked to deflect questions until the inquiry has concluded, instead pouring his efforts into dealing with the Ukraine crisis.
