Ashleigh Barty battles past Karolina Pliskova to clinch first Wimbledon title

  • Barty wins 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 to seal second grand slam title
  • Australian was ‘touch and go’ before the tournament

Ashleigh Barty has won the Wimbledon women’s singles title, beating Karolina Pliskova 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3 to cap a hugely impressive display at the tournament.

A helter-skelter first set saw Barty lose her own service game twice but break Pliskova three times, hitting 12 winners to Pliskova’s two. Barty was broken when serving for the match at 6-5 as the battling Czech forced a tie-break that she won to take the match into a decider.
