Global Survey: Nearly Two Thirds of People Still Rely on Memory to Recall Passwords

But 1 in 5 Need to Change Their Passwords At Least Several Times Per Week Because They Forget Them

Bitwarden, the leading open source password manager for both consumers and business, has today announced the results of a new global password management survey. The survey shows that while there is awareness of password security best practices, the majority of people aren’t putting that awareness to use.

Globally 59% of people still rely on their memories to keep track of their passwords, while nearly one-third keep track of passwords on their computer.

Delving into the stats, 64% of Brits rely on their memories to keep track of passwords while almost one third admit to using pen and paper. Despite this, 60% of Brits have to reset a password regularly because they forget them compared to 56% globally. Ironically, 43% of Brits don’t use a password manager because they think their method of memory or computer storing works.

Similarly, just 46% of Brits are only somewhat familiar with best practice for password security. Over a third of Brits reuse passwords for 5-10 sites and for sharing passwords with others, the preferred method is still verbal followed by messenger and then email. With World Password Day (May 6th) on the horizon, now is the perfect time to take stock of consumer behavior and showcase a path forward.

The good news is that Brits are putting safe password practices into play in some areas:

  • 67% of Brits have an average password length between 9-15 character, compared to 60% globally
  • 76% of employers in the UK do not require employees to use a password manager, but 68% of Brits think workplaces should provide employees with a password manager to protect credentials
    • Globally 65% of people think that their workplace should provide a password manager at work
  • 55% of Brits using a password manager did so because it looked a good way to protect their digital information
  • 38% of Brits want their spouse to start using a password manager

“It’s encouraging to see so many people reporting familiarity with password management best practices,” said Bitwarden CEO Michael Crandell. “While there are holdouts, it shows we need to do more education on the benefits and ease of use of password managers. We don’t think hackers are going to go away, so we want to provide basic password management, for free, to individuals everywhere.”
