Work has begun on a £4.5m plan to redevelop a 210,000 sq ft site in Birmingham’s city centre into a startup hub.
The project, from UK science and tech property developer Bruntwood SciTech, will establish a workspace for startups and scaleups in the Centre City tower, which was built during the 1960s in Birmingham’s theatre district.
Construction has begun, with Bruntwood aiming to complete the project by January 2025. The 20-storey building will offer co-working and pay-as-you-go options for startups.
“The redevelopment of Centre City represents a pivotal moment for Birmingham, underscoring Bruntwood SciTech’s dedication to fostering innovation and economic prosperity in the region,” said Bruntwood senior asset manager Mohammed Ali.
“As we progress with construction, we look forward to welcoming a diverse range of leading organisations to this revitalised landmark, further cementing Birmingham’s reputation as a premier destination for business growth.”
The project is a joint venture from Bruntwood, Legal & General and Greater Manchester Pension Fund. Bruntwood has six innovation hubs in the West Midlands city.
The group’s last venture in the city was the Birmingham Innovation Quarter, unveiled in May 2023.
